Dear Parents
2F Assembly
Thank you 2F for your assembly this morning all about Creative Writing inspired by the visit of ER Reilly. You told us how Mrs Field has been reading out extracts from his books in class: ‘The Real Boy Wizard’; ‘The Look Outs’ and ‘The Ghost of Nazareth’. These stories have given you many ideas and have really caught your imagination for your own writing. You talked about and discussed ideas for a plot and fabulous sentence starters before embarking on your own stories based on the Olympic Games in 2012 and an abandoned haunted house. It was an absolute pleasure to listen to your stories and I couldn’t believe the quality of each story and the language you used. I was literally on the edge of my seat listening to every word that you read. Mr Reilly really did inspire you! Congratulations 2F for an excellent assembly at the end of a very busy week! Thank you Mrs Field for organising the assembly.
World Book Day – Thursday 2 March
The children are invited to come dressed as their favourite characters from literature to help us celebrate World Book Day at Highfield.
World Book Day Mastermind Competition
At the beginning of the school year, the Year 6 children were challenged to read five set books as part of this year’s Mastermind competition. This week saw them battling through two rounds of questions in order to reach the final which will take place on World Book Day. Congratulations to our 2017 finalists who are: Aditya, Alexander, Haris, Mohamed and Suzanna, and also to all the Year 6 children who took part. Mrs Haythornthwaite
Forthcoming Open Day
The school Open Day will take place on Sunday 19 March, 11am – 3pm. We would appreciate it if you could keep this date free as we rely on a large number of children to be in school on the day to help make it a success. Year 5 and 6 children are asked to conduct the tours around the school with prospective parents. More information to follow after half term. Many thanks in advance for your support.
The Wizard of Oz at The Charter Theatre
Last night saw Highfield Priory School take centre stage at The Charter Theatre in front of an audience of over 300 people. We were entertained by Miss Burns’ Dancers (from the age of 4!); our Infant Young Voices; our Year 4 actors and our Year 6 oboe player. It was amazing to see the dance, singing and acting coming together for the first time, involving eighty pupils from all the different age groups and classes. Our youngest performers in Reception and Infants were fearless as though they have been treading the boards for years. The stage presence of our Year 4 pupils (aged 8/9) in front of so many people, the bright lights and the special effects was quite incredible. The production was all pieced together with very limited time at school and just two sessions in the theatre itself. The performance really showed Highfield at its best and was a real celebration of the range of talent at Highfield. Pictures will be posted on our Facebook page over half-term which will give just a flavour of this very colourful and mesmerising performance. I would like to thank our Directors, Mrs Duke, Mrs Shackleton and Miss Burns, for all their hard work in preparing the children and for giving them the opportunity to perform to such a high standard on this stage. It is a memory that I know will stay with parents and children for many years to come.
Official photographs were taken by Steven Spall and these will be available after half term.
The show was filmed by Megan Olivier Films and DVDs will be available to buy. Please contact the school office if you would like to purchase a copy.
The Wizard Of Oz
Miss Burns and I would like to congratulate everyone involved in The Wizard of Oz. You were all fantastic! It was the perfect show for our Highfield children as you all showed us how bright and brave you are and how full of heart! We are very proud of you. Enjoy a very well-deserved rest: Happy Half Term!

Sedbergh Netball Tournament by Jemima (Netball Captain)
On Wednesday 8 February, the A team travelled to Sedbergh Prep School for the Sedbergh Netball Tournament. This competition included 12 teams. The atmosphere when we arrived was thrilling and we were full of adrenalin. Our first match was against Belmont Grosvenor B. We started the match with great teamwork from everyone, by the end of the match we all had a great boost of confidence as the final score was 21-0 to Highfield. Our third match of the day was against a school called Highfield! We were doing really well until disaster struck! Millie badly injured her ankle and wasn’t able to participate in the rest of the matches. We had a sudden change of position. Even though we had a slight change of game plan, we still managed to win 16-0. At the end of the group games we found out we were in the quarter finals and we were filled with joy. We won the quarter final 7-2 and moved onto the semi-final against Belmont Grosvenor. We were so determined to win and reach the final and were almost unstoppable! We won 10-2. The final match was definitely the hardest against Moorfield with both teams determined to win. The final score was 2-1 to Moorfield. We were runners up and were very happy to receive a medal!
Congratulations girls on an incredible achievement against many of the top sporting schools in the North of the country.
