Infants

As the children progress from Foundation Stage into Key Stage 1, they continue to benefit from mainly classroom teaching. Each class has a teacher and a qualified classroom assistant, allowing the teacher to spend time gaining a clear knowledge of the individual child’s interests and abilities. As children learn in a variety of ways, a range of teaching styles is used, including traditional and modern approaches, based on the National Curriculum.

Creative work is displayed prominently throughout the classrooms and corridors, demonstrating the value placed on creative activities and allowing the children to gain a sense of pride in their achievements.

In support of the classroom teaching the children enjoy specialist music, ICT and PE teaching. Each class has a computer and the children spend a minimum of two lessons per week in the ICT suite where each child has their own computer.

As singing and drama is very important in the building of self confidence, this is developed through classroom activities, class assemblies and a Christmas production. In addition the children have the opportunity to observe professional drama productions in school.

We believe that learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom and therefore we enhance work in the classroom with educational visits and field trips, on site and at relevant venues away from school.

                                       

All children, in Key Stage 1, take part in the extra curricular sports club, ‘Highfield Heroes’ and have the opportunity to take part in ballet which is taught through as a lunch time club.

There is a weekly merit system which rewards the things we value most at Highfield, politeness, good conduct, hard work and being a good friend to others.
