Dear Parents

2M Assembly

Wow 2M what a brilliant assembly! It was like watching a full-scale production with the wonderful singing and acting. You made sure we could hear every word and your enthusiasm and exuberance for the topic of the Fire of London really shone through. I know from watching your rehearsal earlier in the week how much you enjoyed preparing for this assembly and it was lovely to witness that enjoyment as you performed today with big beaming smiles on your faces. Thank you to Mr Murray for organising this assembly and to Miss Kidd for her support.

Out and About

When I visited 3M’s maths lesson this week, they were looking at different shapes. Alfie told me that Mrs Morrice had just finished the introduction on the board which helped him to understand different shapes. Apala said she was looking at a question about vertices, which meant how many angles an object had, and she was counting how many vertices her shapes had. Ziyad told me that the lesson was about properties and shape. I asked him if he could explain that, to which he replied very eloquently, “Yes! If I were to describe a cube, it would have 12 edges, 6 faces and 8 corners and each side would be the same length”. Very impressive! Grace told me that ‘Shapes’ was one of her favourite topics in maths as she was completing a question which asked her to build a model out of shapes. She also told me that she felt the sphere was unlike any of the other shapes. I then spoke to Charlotte who was working very methodically through the questions, looking back at the examples. She showed me what she was doing and she had a really good grasp of the topic. All the children were engrossed in the task in hand and the working atmosphere was excellent. Thank you Year 3 for introducing me to Shapes.

News from the Sport’s Field

Year 3 Football

The Year 3 boys visited Oakhill College last Friday for a very competitive football fixture. Lots of good football was played and I was very impressed with the team unity and commitment on display. I am sure that this experience will hold them in good stead for competitive fixtures in the future. Mr Turner

Year 6 Football

This week’s football match against Brabyns saw some lively football being played by the senior team. Our performance in the first half was dominant and we created a panoply of glorious chances from some slick passing which looked like turning the game into a bit of a trouncing. Brabyns mounted a comeback in the second half and there was some doughty defending on display from Freddie and Harvey at the back. The game ended with Highfield Priory winning 6-3. We will now be competing in the semi-finals of the ISA Tournament for the third year running! A big thank you to all the support from the sidelines on a very cold evening, it is greatly appreciated.

Netball v Windermere School by Amy (Year 6)

On 4th February, we played Windermere School. We all tried our hardest and I think that it was our best match this year! The A team lost a very close match 9-8 to Windermere (Year 6 team), however, the B Team won with a score of 5-2 to Highfield! Well done girls!

Chess Match v Bolton

On Monday 2nd February we played our second match of the season against Bolton Boys’ Junior School.  Many of the Highfield players are now improving their concentration skills and really thinking about the effect their next move will have on the game.  Unfortunately, the Bolton team proved too strong for us, winning the game by 9.5 to 5.5.  Wins on the Highfield team were from: Sam (6H), Jonathan (6H), John (5H), Alexander (5H) and Matthew (3M).

EPSCA National Competition

Two teams from Highfield played in the first round of this competition on Saturday.  Team A were 4th and secured a place in the semi-final – to be held in May/June.  Team B were only one point behind but narrowly missed out on a semi-final place.  They have been offered a chance to play in the Plate Competition.  Well done boys! Thanks go to Mr Parkinson, for managing Team A, and Mrs Dable for managing Team B; thanks also to all the parents who transported children and helped supervise them on the day. Mrs Haythornthwaite

Rearranged fixture

The Year 4 football match v Windermere will now take place on Wednesday 26 February, 1.45 kick off.

Junior Holiday Clubs

We have had to cancel the Junior Holiday Clubs that were planned to run on Tuesday-Thursday mornings due to a lack of interest. Mrs Hayes will be running her Holiday Club as usual during half-term.

Prompt Arrival At School

Please could I remind parents that all children must be in school before 8.30am. It can be very unsettling for the children if they regularly turn up late and it can disrupt the start of lessons and assemblies.

Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers 2015

This scheme has now started and runs through to 5th May. Any vouchers you collect, please put in the box which is located in the foyer next to the Sport’s Hall. The vouchers we collect will benefit all the children from Nursery to Year 6 in a wide variety of ways. Mrs Parsons
