Headmaster's Welcome

Headmaster's News - 20th March 2015

20 March 2015

Dear Parents

Thank you 4M for your assembly this morning about the first day of Spring, which is today. We learnt a lot of facts about Spring including a very interesting Greek myth about the daffodil which you acted out beautifully. I was really pleased to hear that you have travelled around the school grounds looking for the first signs of Spring! The latest work in Highfield Haven means we can all enjoy the chance to see Spring in full flow over the coming weeks. This assembly took place just before the eclipse which all the children watched live on their classroom whiteboards. Thank you to Miss Macklam for arranging this assembly.

Easter Egg Raffle

The Easter Egg Raffle will be taking place next Thursday. Tickets are now on sale in the Infant corridor and outside the Office for Juniors. Please bring any Easter Egg donations to the office. All donations are greatly appreciated as we usually have enough eggs for every child which is wonderful. The excitement is already building and there are a lot of slow walks past the Office…and back again!

Poppies Request from Mrs Duke

For our Spring play, “A Letter to the Trenches”, I would like to create a poppy field –but not just any poppy field! I would like every family from the Highfield community to be represented by a poppy which you have made. It would be very special if you could put the name of someone that you would like to be remembered on your poppy so that our ‘field’ commemorates our Highfield family and friends. It could be someone who lived or died in the First World War or it could be someone who is very special to you now.

I have attached a poppy template as a guide but please feel free to use your own design and materials. Each family can produce as many poppies as they would like –we will definitely use every poppy we receive. Please bring your poppies in at the start of the Summer Term.

Out and About with Year Six’s HPSED Examinations

This week, Year Six have been performing their own version of the ‘I have a dream’ speech by Martin Luther King in which they dream of a better world for their HPSED examinations. On Monday, a number of the pupils gave us a preview of what they have been working on. George, Archie, Tom N, Kieran, Ian, Jonathan and Ismaeel delivered the original speech as a group performance which they had choreographed themselves. It was very effective with pupils saying sections together and on their own, kneeling down and standing up together, throwing their fists into the air and ending with, “…knowing that we will be free one day!” It was very powerful and impressive. They were then followed by Sam, Tom D and Harry with their prepared examination speeches. These were written by the pupils about important issues which have an adverse effect on today’s society and their dream for change. The language that they used was incredibly advanced and emotive and their audience was captivated. To stand in front of the whole school and deliver a powerful speech which lasted a number of minutes was a staggering achievement for each of them. We listened in mesmerised silence to ten and eleven year old boys delivering a speech of which any adult would have been proud. Congratulations to all the Year 6 children who performed in the Assembly and to the rest of our Year 6 who received their certificates and medals today and who never cease to amaze me with what heights they can achieve when they ‘Aim High!’

News from Pre-School

It has been a busy week in Pre-School. The children have been learning a new action song with Mme Morrice, introducing the colours in French; a session they always look forward to. They really enjoyed dressing up last week so we continued the theme this week and made crazy hats! We have had lots of fun in the sunshine, using pipes and ramps to carry water; we have also made cakes and tea in the mud kitchen! Mrs Hayes created a lot of excitement using a bubble maker to create giant bubbles which the children chased and popped with great delight. We have enjoyed singing this week, especially ‘Ten Green Bottles’ where we acted out the song practising counting at the same time. Baking was once again a favourite this week when the children made moon cakes with Mrs Field. Miss Halstead.

Such a busy week Pre-School! You have had so much fun. I can’t wait to visit you all soon!

Primary Maths Challenge

Congratulations to Isaac, 6H, who got through to the final round of the Primary Maths Challenge.  Over 79000 pupils took part with 1184 being invited into the Bonus Round, that’s only 1.5%. Of these 530 were medal winners; unfortunately Isaac did not win a medal.  We have only had a couple of pupils in the past who have achieved this.  You should be very proud of yourself Isaac!

The Delancey UK Chess Challenge

Chess players have been busy at Highfield this term, each playing seven matches as part of the first round of the UK Chess Challenge.  Six players achieved a score of 17 points or higher which has enabled them to progress through to the next round: this will be held at Hodgson Academy, Poulton-le-Fylde on Saturday 2 May. Congratulations to: Isaac, Tom D and Sam (6H), Muhammad and John (5H) and Ivan (3M). Mrs Haythornthwaite

Chess Training

There is a chess coaching session being held at Highfield on Sunday, 22 March. The session runs between 9-12pm for players who have just started and 1-4pm for more experienced players and for children who regularly attend the congresses. The sessions cost £5 per child. If you are interested please contact Savannah Dable via email: savannahdablemac.com or by phone on 07515970236.

Netball v Rossall School at Highfield by Amy, Hannah, Kairavi, Angi and Manahil

On Wednesday, all the year 4, 5 and 6 girls played against Rossall School. They all tried their best and played very well. This was our last netball match of the year, before we move on to Rounders after Easter. The first match was very close and competitive. In the first half, we were in the lead by two goals. In the second half, Rossall scored some more goals and altogether the score was 5-5!. In the next match Malaika scored the first goal for Highfield. Rossall scored some very good goals in the second half making the score 9-4 to Rossall. Well done everyone!

Under 11s Cup Football

Well done to the Under 11 Football team on getting through to the semi-final of the ISA Knock Out Football Competition. In the semi-final we lost to a very well-drilled side from The Grange School who went on to become the eventual winners. Highfield then played Firwood School for the 3rd and 4th place, we won 3-2 with goals from Sam D and Kieran. Well done boys; this competition started with over 20 schools. Mrs Parsons

HPPTA Bags 2 School

Please could any bags for PTA Bags 2 School be brought to the yard before 9am on Tuesday 24 March. Thank you.

Travelling by Tuba

Travelling by Tuba will be coming in next Wednesday afternoon to perform a concert to children from Reception to Year 6. They introduce the children to lots of different brass instruments and are very entertaining. I am sure you will get a full report on Wednesday after school!

Thought For The Week

Spring is the season when the whole world seems to be remade. It is a time for thinking about the miracle of life and creation. A quote from the Year 4 assembly.

Building Strength and Individuality

The latest from Highfield Priory

We enjoyed a wonderful Musical Assembly to close the term last week! 🎻 🎹 🎷

Children from both key stages performed in front of the school and their parents with the progress that the children had made clear to hear. It was also lovely to witness the first performances from some of our pupils. 🙂

Each of the instrumental groups were represented with the music teachers on hand to support their pupils. A big well done to all the pupils involved and we look forward to our final musical assembly later on in the summer term! 🎼 🎼Photos from Highfield Priory School's post
