Dear Parents
Out and About in Pre-School, Reception and Infants
The children in Pre-School have been learning all about the life-cycle of a caterpillar. The children were very excited to see the caterpillars and used magnifying glasses carefully to observe them. Pre-School has been engrossed in their behaviour and is looking forward to watching the caterpillars grow and eventually turn into butterflies. We have used butterflies to teach the children about symmetrical patterns during maths, the results were fantastic. The children understood this mathematical concept and continued to create their own art work using symmetrical patterns.
During snack time, the children in Reception discussed and compared their snacks and decided if they were healthy or not. This then led to many different activities on the topic of healthy foods and keeping fit. The children have identified and named different fruits and vegetables and made individual fruit salads. They peeled and cut their own fruit, developing their fine-motor skills, and talked about halves and quarters. They completed tally charts with their friends and other teachers to see which fruit was the most popular. The children also played games, giving descriptive clues to their friends so they could guess the mysterious fruit or vegetable. A busy, fruity and healthy couple of weeks in Reception!
Since returning to school after the Easter holidays, Year 1 has been full of enthusiasm for all their work. In History, they have been learning about Medieval castles and the people who lived and worked in them. The children could not believe the peasants had to pay the same amount of tax as the Lord of the castle. They thought paying any sort of tax was unfair! The children have written some super stories based on The Gruffalo, using their question and exclamation marks correctly. We have started to look at our local area and the places we live in Geography. After learning how to write their address on an envelope, the children were all delighted to receive a letter through their letterbox at home!
In Year 2, the children have been very busy writing stories about wizards and poems for spells. We have been thinking carefully about all the grammar we have learnt this year and we are making sure that our sentences contain nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs to make it descriptive and interesting. In Maths, we have been practising the 4 rules and have completed tricky addition, subtraction, multiplication and division sums where we need to borrow and carry. We have also learnt about other mathematical vocabulary for these operations, such as, to find the product of 4 and 5 you need to multiply. DT has been very exciting and we have designed and made our own stick puppets which we all thoroughly enjoyed.
Years 3 and 5 Perform Pandora’s Box
Congratulations to our superb Years 3 and 5 for their outstanding performance of Pandora’s Box. It was lovely to see them all working together to perform the songs and act. The children in Year 3 learned all their lines by heart and performed poetry and prose with real composure, delivering every line clearly. It was an excellent start to their HPSED journey. The acting in Year 5 was also very accomplished for children of such a young age. They really commanded the stage and entertained their audience. I will be humming and singing the wonderful tunes, which you sang so beautifully, all weekend. Thank you to Mrs Duke and Miss Macklam, our Directors, and Mr Drake for filming and editing the performance.
Open Morning (Booked Tours): Sunday 23rd May
The school will be conducting booked tours on Sunday 23rd May from 9.30am until 12noon. These will be conducted by members of the Senior Management Team and our Nursery Managers. There will be no children or other staff on site. If you know of any parents who are interested in their child attending Highfield Priory School and Nursery, please could you encourage them to book a tour with the school office. Parent recommendations are by far the highest reason for a child attending Highfield Priory School or Nursery. Thank you for your continued support.
