Dear Parents
Welcome Back and Happy New Year!
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas break. The children look refreshed and are full of all the activities and quality time they spent with their families over the holidays. My break was certainly less eventful than last year; I wasn’t in Casualty on Christmas Day (!) and we managed to fit in two very enjoyable trips to the theatre.
Work Completed in Nursery
During the break, we opened up more space in the 2+ area of our Nursery and we created a wet play messy area!
New Starters
I would like to welcome the following children and families who have started with us or are due to start this term: Eva and Holly in Y2, Sophie and Thomas in Pre-School, Emilia, Jonny, Grace, Daisy, Amber, Drew, Edward, Wei Ann, Aryana and Taylia in Nursery.
Out and About at the Bowland House Meeting
I watched the start of the Bowland House meeting on Wednesday, with all the children from Years 1 to 6 filing into the Art Room. It was lovely to see them all coming together as a House, with the younger members really looking up to the Senior members. There was a real sense that they felt they were part of a team, working together and caring for one another. The House Captain, Harvey, had prepared a powerpoint presentation, highlighting areas they needed to work on as a House to gain more house points. He started with the following Acrostic Poem,
Best behaviour
Outstanding homework
Word of the week
Lead by example
Always be organised
Never give up
Don’t forget your manners
It was even interactive with the children having to pick out the differences on two clocks to emphasise the importance of attention to detail and concentration. He spoke with confidence and his House members really responded well to his rousing words. Thank you Bowland and watch out other Houses!
Rugby v Stonyhurst, 24-15 to Highfield!
Sixteen boys from Years 5 and 6 travelled to Stonyhurst to play rugby on Wednesday. Highfield took a commanding lead in the first half with three well worked tries, two from Ali and one from Tom D. This gave Highfield a comfortable lead of 19-0 going into half-time. In the second half, Stonyhurst hit back with two quick tries. The boys had to really dig deep with some excellent defence, and after a good chip ahead and pick up from Jake, he managed to offload the ball to Kieran who went over for a crucial try. Stonyhurst scored a try in the final seconds to make the score 24-15 to Highfield. This is the first time we have played Stonyhurst’s A team (who specialise in rugby) so it was a fantastic result. I would like to congratulate the boys on a brilliant TEAM performance. Kieran was awarded man of the match. Thank you to Stonyhurst for their hospitality; the hot showers and sausage and chips were, once again, very popular with the boys!
The Witches
Rehearsals are well underway for ‘The Witches’, which involves all children in Year 4 and all the dance groups within the school. There are still tickets available from The Charter Theatre for the production on 21st January, £8 for adults, £5 for children and a family ticket costs £24. I know that many children and families attended from other year groups last year and really enjoyed the production.
Facebook and Twitter
I hope you are enjoying our regular updates on Twitter and Facebook. We are trying to give you just a flavour of what the children are up to each week. I certainly enjoyed looking at the pictures of the activities over the Christmas holidays and all the activities you took part in from T-shirt making to snowman models to our Bugsy Malone stars.
Winter Coats
Please could all children have school coats at school every day. Gloves and hats can be bought from the school office. All hats and gloves should be in school colours or navy blue.
Games Kit
If children need to wear a base layer/thermals, they must be white.
If children take other children’s games kit or uniform home, by accident, please return to school the following day.
PTA
The general meeting will be next Thursday, 15 Jan at 8.30am in the dining room.
