Dear Parents
Reception Class Assembly
Wow! What a wonderful assembly Reception! You were all so confident in front of such a large audience. I can’t believe it was your first assembly. It was lovely to hear all the things you have been learning about this year. You have certainly been incredibly busy and achieved so much. I also enjoyed hearing about what you are looking forward to doing at Highfield in the future and looking at your year in pictures. There is no doubt in my mind that you are all going to Aim High at Highfield! Thank you to Reception and to Mrs Field and Mrs Diston for arranging this assembly.
Bring Yer Wellies by Zahara
Today we went on a school trip to ‘Bring Yer Wellies’, we went because we were learning about plants. Our first activity was playing on the beach. I dug big hills with Evie, Eva and Grace. We then sat down on some mats in the greenhouse. A lady called Melissa talked to us about plants. She talked to us about what plants need to grow and how they react to different environments. We then had a chance to plant our own plants. I planted sage and peppermint. I enjoyed this activity. After planting our plants we went to do some pond dipping. I have never done this before and found it fascinating. We stood and scooped our nets into the pond. I caught some tadpoles in my net.
Next we had our lunch, I was glad because I was quite ravenous. I had my lunch on the beach. After lunch we went den-making in the wood corner. We did this in a group. Our den was big, it was awesome! Then we went to the compost heap and looked at different types of worms. We saw long ones, fat ones, thin ones, and short ones. Not all worms are the same.
Finally our day ended. We got back on the bus to go to school. This trip was spectacular. It was my favourite trip so far. My best part of the day was den building. It was so much fun and our den was fantastic. I would love to visit ‘Bring yer Wellies’ again and explore it some more. It was great!
Year 1 visit to Bring Yer Wellies
We visited ‘Bring Yer Wellies Outdoor Centre’ as part of our science topic on ‘Green Plants’. The children spent time exploring a collection of herbs using their senses. The children loved the Lemon Mint but weren’t too keen on Lavender! We looked at the plants growing in the vegetable patch and talked about which plants grow above and below the ground. We spent time looking at the wormery. We explored how worms help to create perfect conditions to grow plants. The children were amazed at how the worms could transform rotten food into compost. We investigated minibeasts using magnifying glasses. Finally, we worked in teams to build boats which we raced down the brook! A super day! Mrs Davidson
Pre- School Sports Day
Last Friday, we saw 22 budding superstar athletes taking part in our annual Pre-School Sports Day. The children took part in four events: the sack race, egg and spoon race, obstacle race and hurdles. They expertly tackled each race with lots of enthusiasm and energy, supported by encouragement from the crowd. They were not fazed by the event and there were lots of smiles and chatter as they completed each race successfully. Congratulations to all our competitors and I can’t wait to see you in action in our PE lessons next year. Thank you to Mrs Parsons for organising this event.
Victorious at Beech House Athletics! by Tom D
On Wednesday 24th June, Highfield travelled to Beech House to compete against 11 other schools in the annual Beech House Athletics competition. This pleasant day kicked off with the individual races with Highfield gaining some valuable top three places from Olivia D, Isabelle, James W, Charlotte, Alex G, Alexander, Matthew W, Thomas, Tom D, Jemima, Noah and Harry. I may not have mentioned everybody but there was no doubt that this was an outstanding team effort. I would like to give a special mention to Jemima and Olivia D who ran up a year group in the Year 5 races, and Kairavi and Manahil who ran up a year in the Year 6 races. Finally, I would like to say a massive well done to Harry C for performing outstandingly in the 400m, winning by nearly 50m! Throughout the day, the scores were very close between us and Huddersfield with each team taking the lead many times. But with outstanding performances in the relays, Highfield edged one point ahead in the closing stages. Finally it was time for the results, the announcer slowly made his way down from eleventh place. The tension between us was great. Eventually it came down to the final two. When Huddersfield were announced second, Highfield all cheered loudly knowing we had won the trophy! I would like to say well done to everyone who competed and a big thank you to Mrs Williams and Mrs Parsons for taking us there and finally to Beech House for hosting us.
ISA National Athletics Finals in Birmingham
Congratulations to Olivia D who helped the Northern team secure a bronze medal in the Year 4 Girls’ Relay at the ISA National Athletics Finals in Birmingham on Monday. Mrs Parsons
Year 4 Cricket v Rossall, Friday 19 June
Last week, the Year 4 Cricket boys travelled to Rossall School to take part in a game of Kwik Cricket. The boys won the toss and opted to field first in the extremely windy conditions. The Highfield boys displayed a fantastic effort to give their very best, which resulted in some brilliant wickets being taken. On his first bowl of the match, Hayyan delivered a fantastic ball and bowled out their batter. Both Thomas and Noah developed their skills and soon adapted their bowling to the firmness of the ground. Rossall finished on 224. It was now time for Highfield to bat and we did so with great enthusiasm. Thomas opened the score sheet with some fantastic 4s, followed by Ahmed and Roan gaining some crucial runs to add to the total. Highfield finished on a total of 219, demonstrating they are willing to take part and give their very best right through to the end. I was extremely proud of the boys and the way they represented the school. Well done to all involved! Mr Drake
Cricket v Westholme
Eleven boys from Years 5 and 6 played cricket at Westholme on Wednesday. Matthew and Tom N were given their first taste of hardball cricket after working hard on Thursday afternoon during cricket activity and did well against a very strong Westholme team. Although we bowled a number of good deliveries and played a few good shots, we were unable to maintain this level of performance. Westholme won the game with a good all round display of cricketing skills. We need to approach our final game of the season against St Mary’s Hall with more intensity and self-belief.
