Dear Parents
6H Assembly
Thank you Year 6 for a brilliant Assembly this morning about having the courage to do the right thing. I really enjoyed watching your play about Jonah and the Whale. After watching all the assemblies this year, and our other performances, you could certainly see that you were ready to take full advantage of being centre stage. Your acting and delivery were excellent and you looked like you enjoyed your moment in the spotlight. Even more importantly, you conveyed an important message to the rest of the school. Thank you 6H and Mrs Haythornthwaite for arranging the assembly.
I hope you all have an enjoyable half-term break and I look forward to seeing you all on Monday 22 February.
HPPTA Cabaret Night
What a fantastic night! We were treated to a very high standard of singing from Mr Murray’s Ensemble. 14 singers were strategically placed around the room amongst the parents on the various tables. Suddenly a singer would stand up and astonish their table by performing to the whole room. They all sang individual songs before revealing themselves as a group to sing a song together. It was very impressive and to be entertained by 17 singers and musicians of such a high calibre was a real treat. A huge thank you to Mr Murray for sharing his talented singers with us; to Mrs Hornby, who was the driving force behind the evening; and to Mrs Jones for her support. Congratulations to everyone involved on such a successful evening.
Cabaret and Dining Extravaganza
Thank you to all those who supported our event last Saturday.
We have had great feedback and would like to once again thank Mr Murray for his involvement. We raised just over £4000 on the evening which is providing extra IT equipment for teaching within the school. HPPTA
Having Fun in Nursery (see our Facebook page)
Everybody has been very busy this week making dragons and dancing with scarves to celebrate Chinese New Year and we loved tasting pancakes on Tuesday. Mrs Elstone
Under 11s Rugby
On Wednesday, we played a rugby fixture against St. Mary’s Hall B team at Preston Grasshoppers. This was our first full competitive fixture and the boys were very keen to try out the various techniques and skills they have been working on since the start of the academic year. After a strong start from St. Mary’s, Highfield really got into the game with excellent tackling and some very strong running; they also competed well in the rucks, winning their fair share of the breakdowns. I was impressed by the whole team’s approach to the match and they made real progress with every minute of the game. The boys really started to take the game to the opposition and, as their self-belief and confidence grew, the scores became very close with St. Mary’s just managing to hang on by seven tries to six. An excellent first outing! The team should now look forward to the fixtures next term with confidence.
Sedbergh Netball
A glorious afternoon of sport was played at Highfield on Wednesday with Sedbergh making the long journey to our home (All-Weather!) turf. The green and blue team learnt a lot from both matches and now need to try to stay a little more focused in their positions. Miss Macklam said there was some strong tackling in the Hockey match with some great individual performances in both teams.
In their Hockey match, the pink team started off slowly but by the second half they had grown in confidence and kept on battling! Unfortunately, on this occasion they lost but they showed great promise for the future. They also maintained their unbeaten record in Netball through some well-practised backline passes and excellent link play between the thirds. Well done!
Thank you to Sedbergh staff and players who were very helpful and encouraging throughout the afternoon. All the girls really seemed to enjoy their games in the sun!
Orienteering With Year 4 at Lever Park
Year 4 travelled to Lever Park on Thursday to complete an orienteering course over approximately 3 miles. They were split into three groups and had to work as a team using a map to find check points. The children quickly learnt not to rush and to look out for familiar landmarks that were on the map. They needed to work out the approximate distance between each point in strides. They had to find 14 in all and their teamwork and problem-solving skills really improved as the afternoon progressed. Congratulations to all Year 4 for successfully completing the course and to Mrs Jones 3J, for organising the event.
Lancashire Chess Association 2016 Junior Chess Championships
7 pupils from Highfield took part in the Lancashire Junior Chess Championships last Saturday at Ridge Community Primary School. There were more than 50 players across the various categories and, as usual, Highfield pupils shone. Dev won the U11 section (remaining unbeaten and defeating Highfield’s Muhammad in the final) and Ivan won the U9s (in which Highfield’s Eryk also came 3rd). Alexander and Kairavi also performed very well in their sections.
Well done to all the players!
World Book Day Junior Mastermind Final 2016
Congratulations to our Year 6 finalists – Muhammad, Harry, Alexander, Manahil and Dev. They have made it through two gruelling rounds of questions about a selection of books and we look forward to seeing them in the final on World Book Day. Mrs Haythornthwaite
School Car Park
We had a near miss on the zebra crossing last week. Please could all parents be aware, when coming onto and off the site, of the speed limit which is 10mph and the need to stop at the zebra crossing. The car park has been working well this year with the help of Mr Forrest. Please could you make sure that you only use one car parking space so that we can make full use of the area available. Many thanks for your co-operation in this matter.
Essential Tree Maintenance
The exit drive will be closed for two days next week due to essential work on the trees. Please take extra care when coming up the in drive which will have to be used to enter and exit the school grounds. To avoid congestion, and if you have time, please park on Fulwood Row and walk up. We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your co-operation.
