Dear Parents
1D Assembly
Thank you 1D for a brilliant assembly on superheroes. You were so confident and you all delivered your words superbly. I enjoyed hearing how you have used your discussion on superheroes to develop your written work and you are now writing longer sentences which include really descriptive adjectives. Well done! You also told us about real life superheroes like Louis Braille who invented Braille so people who are blind can read and Mary Seacole who was a nurse who built her own hospital to help people. It was a lovely assembly in which you all smiled from start to finish. Thank you Mrs Davidson and 1D!
New Arrival!
Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Elstone on the safe arrival of Olivia Sofia on Sunday 5th March weighing 7lb 14oz.
Open Day
Open Day is on Sunday 19th March from 11am until 3pm. This will be an exhibition of all the children’s work and everyone is welcome to have a look around the school at the work your child has been doing as well as at the work they will be studying next year. Please do invite friends and family to join us.
New Appointment
The school has appointed Mrs Angela Prince as our new Director of Studies and Maths Co-ordinator from September 2017. She has previously been a Maths Co-ordinator and is currently in her second Deputy Head post at Grosvenor Park School in Morecambe. Mrs Prince will bring a lot of experience to the school and I look forward to her joining the Highfield family in September.
Out and About with 4H French
I visited a French lesson on Tuesday with 4H. Asiyah explained that they had been looking at pets recently and she showed me the written work she had completed in her book. They had written about animals they like. She said, ‘J’aime les chats’ and she pointed to where she had written it in her book and told me that she had a cat at home. The new topic they were starting was about families. Mme Morrice wrote the names of family members on the board and the children repeated her pronunciation. They also knew some of the names already which they had great delight in saying to Mme Morrice. Adam linked words that they had used before to say that grandmother was ‘grand-mère’ and really tried hard with his pronunciation. The children copied out the words carefully, practising the pronunciation each time. Mme Morrice then gave out the worksheets to all the children who said ‘Merci!’ as they received theirs which Mme Morrice responded to with ‘de rien‘. The children started by translating the instructions. Aditi said that ‘regarde les phrases’ meant look at the sentences. Jaison then said that ‘écris les noms sous les photos’ meant that they had to write the names of the people under the photos. The class then proceeded to answer all the questions orally before completing the worksheet. Everyone was fully involved in the lesson, enjoying speaking in French and hands were constantly flying up as the children were eager to contribute and ask questions. The children always enjoy their French lessons and I think the oral focus not only enhances that enthusiasm but also gives them the opportunity to speak French, perfecting their pronunciation which will help them in their secondary schools. National Engineering Week 2017 with 5D by Hamdaan
This week in our PSHEE lessons, we have been discussing National Engineering Week. Our task in the lesson was to build a bridge with only paper straws, glue and two pieces of card. At the end, we would place weights on them to see whose design could hold more weight. My group’s design was super simple but effective. For our base, we glued straws to a piece of card and then tightly wrapped the excess card around the sides. We did this again to create a strong base. Then, we sandwiched triangles in between the bases to support it. Our plan must have worked because it held 6kg!
National Engineering Week 2017 with 5D by Zahara
This week it was National Engineering Week so 5D decided to design our own bridges. We had a look at different designs and discussed why they were effective. So we got cracking and Mr Drake put us in groups. I was with Zain, Abdullah and Zaynab. As a group, we decided to do a Warren Bridge which is made up of 3 upside down Vs tied onto the sides. We also did a criss-cross effect along the base and wrapped card around the paper straws. Then, it was the moment we were all waiting for! We were all nervous because we thought our bridge would collapse as we had only used paper straws and card. Ours held 6kg and bear in mind we only used paper straws and card! National Engineering Week was spectacular and I learnt a lot about engineering. Building a bridge was extremely tiring but I would enjoy becoming an engineer in the future.
Rugby News
All the boys in Years 5 and 6 were in action on Wednesday, which was a beautiful day, travelling to Rossall and Oakhill to play Rugby. The boys who went to Rossall were in a tournament with twenty teams and they won two out of their five games. The team who travelled to Oakhill had a really good afternoon playing tag rugby. The game was very free-flowing with many tries being scored by both teams. Honours were about even at the end with all the boys really enjoying the experience. Congratulations to all the boys who took part on this busy afternoon of rugby.
ISA Netball by Olivia D, Millie and Zahara
On Monday 6th March, we went to Hulme Hall, Manchester for the ISA Netball Tournament. We played 5 matches. We won against Abbeygate 5-2 and Scarisbrick 3-0 but unfortunately we didn’t get through to the final. The standard of Netball was very high and we played some exciting games. It was a great experience. All the girls played and we enjoyed representing the school.
Sir Tom Finney Football Tournament
The Year 4 team played at the annual Sir Tom Finney Tournament this week. The boys produced a number of very good performances earning a couple of outstanding victories and a draw. Unfortunately, we were knocked out in the group stage due to a single goal in goal difference. Well done Yawar, Aditya, Joshua A, Zain, Omar, Eryk, Jaison and Joshua D. Mr Turner
Footballers take to the field at PNE!
Good luck to our footballers who will be taking part in a penalty shootout at half time in the Preston North End game on Saturday.
HPPTA Mothers’ Day Breakfast
Thank you to everyone who has returned their RSVPs, please keep them coming as the deadline is Friday 17th March. Alternatively, you can RSVP on the form on the PTA cupboard door in the Dining Room. If you are planning to come to the breakfast, the children will need to go to their class first to receive their mark in the register and then they will be sent into the Dining Room to join you.
Furthermore the Mother's Day shop will be taking place the day after the breakfast, on Friday 24th March. You will be receiving a letter home soon with further details. We look forward to seeing you for Breakfast on Thursday 23rd March!
Cabaret Evening
I look forward to seeing everyone who is coming to our Cabaret Evening on Saturday night which promises to be another very successful and memorable evening.
