23rd September 2022

Dear Parents

It has been a busy couple of weeks at Highfield with our extra-curricular programme fully underway. The children have been taking part in a wide range of sporting activities, early morning Bootcamp, Art and Design and Spanish Club to name but a few. We have also held auditions for the School Choir and our first sports matches of the year. I have really enjoyed running Chess Club with over twenty competitive players turning up. The camaraderie and friendly competition were great to watch as players moved up and down our chess ladder as they won and lost games. I am looking forward to building a strong team this year with the hope of holding matches against other schools and attending County Congress and competitions. It has been a real pleasure seeing the children working hard and making the most of all the opportunities available to them. We look forward to posting pictures on our social media pages over the coming weeks.

Curriculum Evenings

The Curriculum Evenings concluded for the term last week. I hope you found them informative and that they gave you an insight into what the children will be covering in class this year as well as answering any questions you may have. The next formal opportunity to speak to your child’s teachers about their progress will be at our Parents’ Evening on Thursday 13th October. We are planning to offer an in-person and an online option for parents. More information will be published next week.

Under 11s Netball v Oakhill by Amelia and Lola

On 14th September, Highfield played against Oakhill. Year 5 played very well especially considering it was their first match. We had an amazing Goal Shooter and Grace, who has never played before, was superb as our Centre. Everyone in the team tried their very best. The final score was 4-3 to Highfield. Well done, everyone!

Under 11s Football v SMH

All the boys in Years 5 and 6 played football against SMH on Wednesday. The A team had to withstand a lot of pressure at the start of the game and overcome some first match nerves. However, as the boys started to gain confidence and gel as a team, they started taking control of the game and finished the 2nd third, 2-1 up. In the final third, Highfield added some real pace to the game and, after a number of lovely touches, scored a flurry of goals. The final scored was 7-2. In the development team match, Highfield started well, dominating possession and field position. However, they were unable to capitalise on their possession. SMH started to take a foothold in the game and converted a number of opportunities quickly. Highfield rallied in the final third to score, taking the final score to 5-1 to SMH. It was an excellent first outing for all the boys who showed lots of enthusiasm and energy. We are now looking forward to next week’s game against Oakhill.

News from our Nursery

Nursery has had a fabulous start to the new school year. We have been busy making our own pizzas, engaging in messy play, going on autumn nature walks, singing counting rhymes, participating in a dough disco (!), visiting the music room to develop our counting to the beat skills, dancing with Miss Burns and making many new friends. Our Forest School sessions with Mrs Marskell are now underway. In our first session, we were busy exploring the forest and all the rich learning opportunities that Autumn has to offer the children. We also made bird feeders to make sure that the birds have plenty to eat as the weather gets colder. In our second session, water play was on the agenda! The children demonstrated excellent core muscles and resilience as they carried the buckets up the slope to then pour it down the tubes. Great teamwork was also seen as they passed the water between themselves to reach the top. The children had a lot of fun in this session and there were many giggles and laughs from them all. News from Pre-School

We have been delighted to welcome our new Pre-School children over the last few weeks and what a fantastic start to the term they have had! They are all settling in nicely and making new friends. We have used Circle Time and music to learn each other’s names and to build new friendships. It is lovely to see the children happy and relaxed, enjoying their new environment and the new activities on offer such as Bootcamp, yoga, dance and P.E. We have also been talking about Autumn and have spent time leaf printing, identifying the leaves on the trees and discussing colour changes in this season. We are looking forward to all the exciting events and opportunities that this term brings! Miss Halstead

Grammar Schools

Good luck to all our Year 6 children who are taking Grammar School examinations tomorrow. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep tonight.  Read the questions carefully and keep an eye on the time.  We are very proud of you all.

Reminder

Please could you take extra care when driving down Fulwood Row. We have had a few near misses and a complaint from a local resident about people cutting over the bus lane at the end of the road. Thank you for your support and consideration.
