Dear Parents

5H Assembly

Live theatre came to Highfield last Friday! 5H retold the story of David and Goliath through song and excellent acting. Each pupil delivered their words perfectly and really enjoyed their moment centre-stage. The assembly also held an important message for the school about using intelligence, inner strength and self-belief to overcome adversity. Thank you to 5H and Mrs Haythornthwaite for this wonderful performance.

Christmas Decorations

Thank you to Mr Desai and his team of PTA helpers who transformed the school on Tuesday morning. It was lovely to hear and see the children’s reaction to the transformation when they emerged from their classes.

Winter Fayre

It was fantastic to see the whole School and Nursery community coming together for the Winter Fayre last Friday. The classes had worked hard throughout the week and on the day to provide a range of items to sell. The chocolate raffle, lucky dip and waffle stand were particularly popular. Thank you to all the parents, children and staff who donated prizes, made items to sell or offered their help. It was a wonderful way to finish the week.

Christmas Party Day

We will be having our Christmas Jumper Day next Friday on Party Day. Children may come to school in party clothes and Christmas jumpers. Please make sure they bring suitable coats and footwear for the day. The children will wear their uniform for the rest of the week.

News from Nursery

The Nursery children are fully embracing the festive season. They have helped decorate our Nursery trees this week, they have enjoyed Christmas stories with hot chocolate and, using their woodwork skills, they have made Christmas decorations in Forest School.

They have also put both their mathematical and practical skills to the test as they did some festive baking with Miss Shallcross. They used their counting and recognising number skills as they weighed out the ingredients together; big shoulder and arm movements were then used as they mixed their mixture together. The cakes were delicious, thank you Nursery!

Our Nursery children have also been experimenting with water and sound in the woods. We made our own water sound line as we practised our pouring and mixing skills, filling up the jars with coloured water. Together with Mrs Marskell, we then made a frame for our sound line using large logs and rope, this demonstrated excellent teamwork amongst the Nursery children. The children were mesmerised by the variety of sounds they could make with different items found around the woods. Mrs Elstone

Rehearsals

Rehearsals are well underway for our Junior Concert and Nativity. The children are working hard learning the songs, hymns and lines and the excitement is building. We can’t wait to invite parents into school to watch and celebrate the final productions.

5 Stars!

Congratulations to Ms Cowburn and her kitchen team for retaining their five stars after being inspected this week. I would like to thank our kitchen team who work incredibly hard to provide excellent meals on a weekly basis.

Fire Practice

School and Nursery will be having a fire practice before the end of term. We will warn the children in advance so as not to cause unnecessary alarm.

Board Games and Toys

At break, when the weather is not suitable to play outside, the children really enjoy playing board games. The Student Council has completed an audit on all the games we have across the school and although we do have a number of games in each class, the children have compiled a wish list for their classrooms. If you have any of the games below at home, in good condition, and would be happy to donate them to school, please could you bring them into the School Office. The Student Council would really appreciate your support. They will then distribute them to the classes. Thank you.

Monopoly, Snakes and Ladders, Uno, Guess Who, Cards, Lego (mentioned by a number of classes), Jigsaws, Operation, Battleships, Head Bandz, Connect 4, Bananagrams, Jenga, Jungle Speed Jenga, Chess, Dobble.

Under 11s Football v Rossall

All the boys in Years 5 and 6 represented Highfield at Football against Rossall School on Wednesday in our final game of the term. Although we finished second in both games, they were closely fought contests with the boys competing right up to the final whistle. I am delighted with their level of effort and with the progress all the boys have made this season. I am looking forward to starting Rugby and seeing the same level of enthusiasm from the boys next term.

Under 11s Hockey

Our U11 Hockey team was in action on Wednesday against SMH. The girls were excited to put into practice some of the things they’d been working on in Hockey Club. SMH dominated the first 5 minutes of the match, however Highfield’s determination paid off with some brilliant passing through midfield to Samira who beat the stranded SMH keeper. From then on it was Highfield who dominated with some excellent tackling, tracking back and using space. The score at half time was 2-1 to Highfield. The girls retained possession for much of the 2nd half with Penny making some excellent saves in goal. The whole team really worked hard and achieved another well-worked goal in the last few minutes to leave the final score 3-1. Mrs Botton
