Dear Parents
Start of Term
Happy New Year! The children returned last week re-energised and excited about the term ahead. Our full programme of activities has started, ranging from Little Aces to Mad Science! We also have a number of popular new activities this year, including Chatterbooks and Quiz Club. There are a number of exciting events to look forward to this term, starting next week with a celebration of Chinese New Year. We will be holding a themed lunch and we have invited visitors from Lancaster University to talk about Chinese New Year to the children. We have also booked the Landmark Theatre again for our Year 4 performance of The Jungle Book, supported by Miss Burns’ dancers. These events are just two of the many exciting events in our term ahead.
Forest School
In Forest School, we have been observing the birds that visit our woodland area. We are learning their names and making bird feeders to help them through the winter months. This has helped to build the children’s recognition ready for the Great British Bird Watch at the end of January.
We have been learning about sound frequencies by filling glass jars with different amounts of water and tapping the jars with a spoon. We then listened and worked out which was the loudest and quietest, then put them in order.
Our Nursery children have been focusing on colours by organising the coloured rocks into piles and using the coloured stepping stones to get from one end of the woodland to the other, this was great fun. The children have been exploring the woodland independently, building their confidence and trust which are important life skills as they get older. Mrs Marskell
Piano Lessons
I would like to thank Mr Stout for his Musical Assembly this morning. Mr Stout introduced the children to the piano, playing a range of music and asking the children questions. The children were really interested and enjoyed the interactive assembly. Mr Stout will be teaching individual piano lessons on a Friday. If you are interested in signing up, please visit the school office, for the application letter, on Monday. The lessons will be for junior children only and will be allocated on a strictly first-come-first-served basis as there are limited places available. Please note that if your child is already learning to play an instrument at school they may not learn piano too.
Open Day
This will take place on Sunday 12th March. It is a really important day for the school and a chance to celebrate your children’s work as well as the activities they have been doing. Years 5 and 6 children will be needed for tours on the day, and Year 4 children will be demonstrating some of the lessons and activities that take place during the school week. This is a responsibility they really enjoy and a very important experience, especially for those children who give tours. The children always do a superb job and it supports the work we do in HPSED on their communication skills. Please can you mark the date in your calendars and pass it on to any friends, family, work colleagues or neighbours who may be interested. If they cannot make that date, they are welcome to contact the office and book a tour on a week day. Thank you for your ongoing support.
Under 11s Football
Our U11 girls’ football teams were in action on Wednesday against St Maria Goretti school. Both teams started really well, despite the wind and rain, and showed some excellent passing and tackling. St Maria Goretti scored first but the Highfield girls kept their heads up and had some great chances. Their determination eventually paid off and some great teamwork led to a brilliant Highfield goal! It was end-to-end play for the final few minutes until Lyla dribbled the ball from midfield, around various defenders and finished with a shot into the top corner. The girls all played amazingly well and worked brilliantly as a team. Well done girls!
Grasshoppers Rugby
Year 6 rugby players travelled to Grasshoppers this week to train on their excellent 4G surface. It was a fantastic opportunity to play on one of the main playing surfaces in the area and at the home of one of the leading clubs in the North West. The children practised their tackling and contact skills before moving onto small-sided games. The progress they made meant we were able to finish with a full match. We also had an opportunity to watch two of the leading rugby schools, St. Mary’s Crosby and AKS Under 18s, play the start of their County Cup match on the same pitch. The children really benefitted from the experience and are now looking forward to their matches against Rossall next week.
