Dear Parents

Start of Term

Happy New Year! The children returned last week, full of energy and excitement for the spring term ahead. With all clubs and activities now running this week, there is something for every child to enjoy, from Spanish Club to Mad Science! We also have our wonderful production of Pinocchio at Crossgate Church at the end of the month, which the children are already working hard towards.

Class 5A Assembly

Thank you to everyone in 5A for an extremely interesting and informative assembly, teaching us all about the Elizabethan era. We could see that you have learnt so much studying this topic in Humanities, and your passion for the subject made sure everyone listened attentively to all your fascinating facts. The presentation and confidence demonstrated by the whole class, was very impressive. Well done to 5A and Mrs Morrice!

Open Day

On Sunday 17th March, we will be hosting an Open Day to welcome new families to our Highfield community. It is a really important day for the school and a chance to celebrate your children’s work and extra-curricular activities. Year 5 and 6 children will be needed to provide tours on the day, and Year 4 children will be demonstrating some of the lessons and activities that take place during the school week. This is a responsibility that the children take very seriously and really enjoy. They always do an amazing job and it strongly supports the work they do in HPSED on developing their communication skills.

Please could you mark the date in your diaries; it is already on the school calendar provided at the start of term. We would greatly appreciate it if you would pass the date on to any friends, family, colleagues or neighbours who may be interested. If they cannot make that date, they are welcome to contact the office and book a tour on a weekday. As always, thank you for your ongoing support.

News from Pre-School

This week we made the most of the winter weather and headed outside to enjoy playing in the snow. Everyone loved exploring the shapes they could make with the snow, as well as the sound it made when they walked on it. We have been learning about the seasons and observing what the environment looks like in Winter. The children then enjoyed painting their very own winter trees. We have had a wonderful winter week in Pre-School!

Netball v Sedbergh Prep

This week, saw our first Netball fixture of the spring term. With the extreme weather causing the Hockey fixture to be cancelled, all the girls came together to show true Highfield spirit for a great afternoon of sport. Well done to all Year 5 and 6 girls who displayed their skills in each match, winning all of them. Every player played a vital role within their team, contributing at key moments and creating lots of goals.

Global Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Competition

Over the Christmas break, Veda represented Great Britain at the Global Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Competition in India. This year, 450 students aged between 7 and 15 participated, representing 24 countries. Veda earned the title of Champion in her category after an impressive display of knowledge. A huge well done from everyone at Highfield, Veda!

Gymnastics Success

Congratulations to Amelie who became Lancashire Champion in Gymnastics at the start of January. A fantastic achievement, Amelie!

Rugby at Grasshoppers

On Wednesday, Year 5 and 6 boys travelled to Grasshoppers to train on their 1stXV 4G rugby pitch. The boys really enjoyed the experience on one of the best playing surfaces in the north of the country. They worked really hard on their contact skills in preparation for their match in a couple of weeks. We also trained alongside Myerscough Rugby Academy which is for aspiring young players in their bid to become Professional Players (linked to the Premiership Club, Sale). They were National Rugby Champions in 7s last year. The whole experience gave the children a real feeling for contact rugby in a first-class environment. We will be returning to Grasshoppers for three more sessions this term.

School Minibus

With the support of the PTA, the school has purchased a new minibus. This has already been used this term, taking children swimming and to Preston Grasshoppers. I would like to thank the PTA for all their hard work, raising funds to provide more opportunities and resources for the children.

Pinocchio at Crossgate Church

Rehearsals for Pinocchio are well underway with our Year 4 actors practising their lines and each Act of the play. Miss Burns is also helping her dancers with their steps as they fine-tune their routines for the play. Tickets will be available from the School Office on Monday 22nd January. There is plenty of space, so please invite family and friends. The whole school community is welcome.

School Chess

The School Chess Club has its first fixture of the term on Tuesday 6th February against Our Ladies and St Edwards The children are training hard with the support of our coach, Mr. Greenwood.

Cold Weather

Please do take care driving to and from school this term. Please drive slowly on Fulwood Row, especially as you come down towards the school entrance.

Hats and Gloves

If your children are wearing hats or gloves this term, could you please make sure gloves are maroon or navy, and children are wearing school coats and school hats.
