Dear Parents

Pinocchio at Crossgate Church

On Wednesday evening, our talented children took Crossgate Church by storm with their performance of Pinocchio. Our young performers exuded clarity and confidence as they told the story of Pinocchio through dance and drama. In front of a large audience, bright lights and loud music, they showed no fear and thoroughly enjoyed their moment on stage. Miss Burns’ dancers elegantly showed off everything they have learnt in their dance lessons this year. Our Year 4 actors commanded the stage, delivering their lines with poise and confidence. All the children thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience, from practising at home with family, rehearsals in school, fun filled rehearsals at the venue and the final production. It will be a memory that they will cherish for a lifetime. Congratulations to everyone who took part and thank you to our directors, Mrs Jones and Miss Burns, our light and sound technician, Mr Drake, our costume manager, Mrs Morrice and all the staff at Crossgate Church and Highfield Priory who helped to make this show such a success. What a team!

Artist and Composer of the Term

The artist of the term is Jackson Pollock, an American artist widely known for his ‘drip technique’. Our composer of the term is Johannes Brahms, a German composer, pianist and conductor of the mid-romantic period. The children will be introduced to them in assemblies and in class. Please support their interest at home too.

Netball V SMH

What an amazing afternoon of netball! Both Year 5 and 6 had teams to compete against SMH, with both matches taking place at the same time; 1 in the sports hall and 1 on the outdoor pitch. Both teams came away with an impressive win! In recent weeks, we have been working on using the entire court and utilising all the space. The girls showed great teamwork, working on passing the ball around the whole team. Well done girls, we now look forward to the Sedbergh netball tournament next Wednesday!

Rugby V SMH

Over thirty pupils in Year 5 and 6 played their first competitive fixture against St. Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst, at Preston Grasshoppers.  We played three games, one Year 6 and two Year 5 Games, which meant all the pupils could play at the same time. After a tentative start, the children really started to pull together as a team and put into practice what they had been working on in training. The mauling and rucking were especially good with the children really competing for the ball in the contact situations. This led to Highfield having a good deal of possession which we managed to convert into tries. In all three games we managed to claw our way back into the matches as the children’s confidence improved. The children still need to work on coming up more quickly in defence and committing to the tackle with their shoulder. I was very pleased with the children’s level of energy and enthusiasm and look forward to the next fixture after half-term.

Open Day

As our Open Day on Sunday 17th March is now only next month, we are starting to advertise throughout Preston. If anyone is able to support this by putting up a banner or sharing leaflets within your community, please contact the school office. Year 5 and 6 children will be needed to provide tours on the day, and Year 4 children will be demonstrating some of the lessons and activities that take place during the school week, so please pop this date in your diaries. The children always enjoy this experience and take away valuable skills which strongly support their work in HPSED. We would greatly appreciate it if you would pass the date on to any friends, family, colleagues or neighbours who may be interested. If they cannot make this date, they are welcome to contact the office and book a tour on a weekday. As always, thank you for your ongoing support.

Road Safety at School

Please could I remind everyone to take care when driving in and out of school and ensure no-one exceeds the 5mph speed limit on school grounds.

Library Books

Please could all parents check if there are any Highfield Library books at home and return them to the school office as soon as possible. Thank you.
