School Meals and Healthy Eating

A Healthy Environment

At Highfield Priory we encourage a healthy lifestyle which includes many and varied sports and activities. Highfield Priory is committed to raising nutritional standards and promoting healthy eating and has been awarded Healthy School's status. All aspects of food and nutrition in school support the health and well-being of pupils, staff and visitors. Our experienced chef provides a fine selection of food including vegetarian and halal prepared foods.

All food is freshly prepared in our kitchen by our own fully qualified chef and kitchen assistants.

Their challenge is to provide healthy meals that are interesting and exciting, taking into account pupils likes and dislikes and their religious and cultural requirements. There is no point in offering food that is technically healthy if it is so dull and repetitive that little gets eaten.

Wherever possible our menus are cooked using alternative cooking methods that will make them healthier, for example, baking or grilling rather than frying. Our chef avoids artificial flavourings and colourings, uses semi-skimmed milk and reduces fat, sugar and salt in homemade cakes and biscuits.

Healthy eating is promoted in the classroom with fresh fruit and milk available in the morning.

Studies have shown that de-hydrated children have low levels of concentration, consequently we ensure that each child has a personal bottle of water in their classroom which they can access at any time.

Our lunch menu works on a three week cycle.

Table Manners

Within HPSED, the children are taught how to hold their cutlery correctly, how to eat, how to converse, how to seat themselves and how to excuse themselves from the table. This is reinforced by monitors and teachers in the Dining Room.

A big congratulations to former Highfield pupil Evie Edwards who recently starred as Little Cosette in the Create Theatre Academy's version of Les Misérables.

Performed at the Blackburn Empire Theatre, the production was a huge success with audience reviews such as:

"The BEST amateur show I have ever seen!!"
and
"Every single person in the show was absolutely phenomenal! I couldn’t actually believe it!"

Well done Evie - everyone at Highfield is very proud of you!Photos from Highfield Priory School's post
